Refugee Assistance Ministry

Refugee Assistance Ministry

The newest ministry of Community Ministries is located right in our own backyard! The Nora area is home to a large community of refugees, the vast majority of whom are from Burma.  Volunteers are needed to help with the tutoring programs at First Baptist Church and Nora Elementary School (both in the Nora area) to help kids and adults with English language skills. Another focus is to provide mentors to encourage refugee teens/young adults in completing their high school diploma or equivalent at North Central High School.  The time commitments are flexible.  To volunteer or to learn more, contact Cathy Kennedy at jaycathy@aol.com or 317-418-5869.

Violins and Violas Needed!

The Washington Township Middle Schools' Orchestra Program has an urgent need for violins and violas to accommodate a large group of needy refugee children wishing to participate in orchestra classes this fall.  Repair funds are available while instrument purchase funding is not.  If you have a violin or viola that could be donated to the schools, please contact Carol Dennis at 317-259-1978 or clrfdennis@aol.com.

Interested in Helping?

We need help to provide assistance to those in the Nora area who have come from refugee camps around the world. RAM will focus on three areas – teaching English to Burmese children on Monday evenings and to adults on Saturday mornings at First Baptist Church, helping the refugees in a Nora afterschool program on weekdays, and mentoring young adults who are seeking to obtain their GED. Contact Cathy Kennedy at jaycathy@aol.com or 418-5960 if you are interested in learning more or would like to volunteer to help..
