Global Health
The United Methodist Council of Bishops has designated Global Health as one of the priorities of the UMC and has formed the Global Health Initiative. Its purpose is to enroll members of the UMC in the goal of significantly decreasing the numbers of people who suffer and die daily around the world from the diseases of poverty: HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria.
St. Luke's Global Health Commission has been formed to further this goal. In addition to addressing the diseases of poverty, this commission will work on issues of hunger as well. Members of the commission will work to support efforts such as Nothing But Nets, The Interfaith Hunger Initiative and other programs to reduce the diseases of poverty. Jerry
In 2011, the commission began sponsorship of Pedal for Peace, a bicycling fundraiser held at the Velodrome each fall. The recipient of the $18,000 raised was the Indianapolis Interfaith Hunger Initiative (IHI). In 2012, the interfaith event will be held on Saturday, September 29 at the velodrome and will again benefit IHI. For more information and to register, contact Dawn McCord at sdmccord@sbcglobal.net.
Jerry Burkman is the commission chair and can be reached at 896-5289 or grajvb@comcast.net.
Imagine No Malaria
Imagine No Malaria is a ministry of The United Methodist Church Global Health Initiative. Imagine No Malaria is more than just a campaign against a disease that kills children and destroys families. It’s a movement, to make real change in the world. Every day, thousands of families in Africa lose loved ones because of malaria.
As we celebrate the season of Lent, we invite you to be renewed through the Imagine No Malaria Lenten Devotional. Sign up on the bottom right of the Imagine No Malaria website. This spiritual resource will be sent via e-mail and provide a daily centering moment for each of the 40 days of Lent, connecting each of us with the people of Africa.
