Missa Gaia (The Earth Mass) and Earth Fair
Friday & Saturday, May 16 & 17, 7:30PM
St. Luke’s Sanctuary
Tickets are available at the West Passage table on Sundays, from the Music Department office during the week, or via the Encore Vocal Arts website (www.encorevocalarts.org): $20 adult, $15 senior (55+), $10 student.
The Chancel Choir, Children’s Choirs, collaborative guests, Encore Vocal Arts, along with guest instrumentalists will present two performances of Paul Winter’s Missa Gaia. This rhythmic, joyous and contemporary celebration of the Earth is filled with beautiful choruses, global and jazz influences, as well as featuring the voices of wolf, whale and loon! Based on the stirring words of St. Francis “Canticle of Brother Sun” (which we frequently sing as “All Creatures of Our God and King”) the performances are organized as a liturgical mass – including solo selections presented by the 40-voice chamber choir Encore Vocal Arts, and the St. Luke’s Chancel Choir. Both nights, the Green Ministry will host a narthex Earth Fair with informational displays from local environmental organizations.
Young Voices of Indianapolis, Sandi Patty Concert
Benefit for the Julian Center, May 22
More than 100 local children and young adults of Young Voices of Indianapolis (YVI) will sing with special guest and world-renowned soprano, Sandi Patty, May 22, 2008, 7 p.m. at St. Luke’s Methodist Church, 100 W. 86th Street. Led by Founder and Director Marian Bender, Young Voices of Indianapolis also uses its talents to support the community beyond music through mission and community service projects. A portion of the concert’s proceeds will benefit the Julian Center, a domestic violence shelter in Indianapolis. The choir will be accompanied by a chamber orchestra comprised of local professional musicians.
The host and special guest star, Sandi Patty has become a local favorite as the host of numerous sold-out Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra Yuletide performances. She is a 2004 Gospel Music Hall of Fame inductee with 39 Dove Awards, five Grammy Awards, three RIAA-certified platinum and five gold recordings.
The concert will also feature a commissioned choral composition by Mark Leslie Hayes. Hayes is well-known for his unique choral settings which draw from such diverse styles such as gospel, jazz, pop, folk, and classical to achieve a truly "American sound."
Young Voices of Indianapolis’ mission is to provide central Indiana children, grades 2 to 12, with a superior choral music education. Founded in 2005 by Marian Bender, this non-profit community choral organization emphasizes community service through mission projects, charity work, and national touring.
Tickets are $20 for Festival Seating or $40 for Dress Circle Seating. For tickets and other information call 317.926.0425 or visit www.yvindy.com.
