Back To School Extravaganza

Back to School Extravaganza 2022 will make an impact locally and globally | Serving Opportunities July 24-August 6

Washington Township is a school district with 70% students of color, and more than 60% of all enrolled students living in poverty. This school district, in our own backyard, has the stated priority to “provide an equitable educational environment that inspires and empowers all students to increase their academic success as well as their social and emotional learning skills."

Students

Each year we partner with Washington Township schools as they kick off a new academic year. We work closely with their teachers and administrators to find the BEST way we can support the school district, while at the same time upholding our shared commitment to justice, anti-racism, and inclusivity.

Although the goal has not changed, the methods have looked different over the past few years:

  • Sorting and packing school supplies for every school in the district, so they can offer supplies at no charge to EVERY student who needs them (that was more than 4,200 students in 2021!).
  • Volunteers will sort on July 24 & 25.
    • Volunteers will sort at the MSDWT warehouse (not the church).
    • Supplies will be sorted onto pallets for school and school personnel will deliver supplies.
  • Volunteer slots will open soon!

GIVE NOW

Classrooms

The adopt-a-classroom program provides $1000 grants to teachers to purchase books, math games, sensory toys, class celebrations, science projects, and other learning tools for their classrooms.

Classrooms can be sponsored by individuals, families, and small groups, who will have the opportunity to connect with teachers and students at different points during the school year.

Last year St. Luke's sponsored 16 classrooms, and our goal is to sponsor 20 classrooms this year!

Local

Volunteer teams will also help individual Washington Township schools with work projects between July 24-August 6 to prepare for school opening. Examples of projects include classroom cleaning, outside beautification, supply distribution, etc. Volunteer spots will open soon!

Global

St. Luke's will also extend our reach globally to Kenya through our outreach partner Umoja. Our support will provide food, books, uniforms, and school supplies for Kenyan elementary students at Geta Primary School for the entire academic year. We will also have the opportunity to travel to Kenya in early 2023 to visit Geta School! Click here to learn more about UMOJA. Click here to receive updates about the Kenya global mission trip.
