Racial Justice Learning Trip-Louisville Day Trip
October 13, 2023 - 7AM-7PM - Louisville, Kentucky
Cost is $75/person
Each of us has a role in becoming an antiracist church, which involves learning more about the life experiences of those around us, and educating ourselves about the trials and triumphs of those who have walked a different path.
What better way to start (or continue!) your journey than with a visit to two award winning museums in Louisville, KY.
Aboard a comfortable motor coach, we will head south for our first stop at the Muhammad Ali Center. We will enjoy a guided tour of the Ali Center, which is dedicated to the life and legacy of Muhammad Ali. As a boxer, Muhammad brought unprecedented speed and grace to his sport, while his charm and wit changed forever what the public expected a champion to be. But there was always far more to Muhammad than what took place in a boxing ring. The museum captures the inspiration derived from Ali’s incredible life, while highlighting his Six Core Principles.
From there we will travel to the Speed Art Museum on the campus of the University of Louisville, where a box lunch will be served. We will have docent-led tours of Breonna's Garden, which is a celebration of the life of the late Breonna Taylor. This exhibit, which was co-curated by her mother, Tamika Palmer, includes the beautiful, larger-than-life portrait of Breonna by Amy Sherald. Then we will tour the exhibit “Stories Untold” from Princeton University. This exhibit features American Art focusing on Feminism. Environmentalism, and Racism. Both exhibits are meant to spark reflection and conversation. Time will be allotted to visit other galleries at this wonderful museum.
On the way back to Indianapolis, we will make a brief stop in Seymour, IN to visit the Tuskegee Airmen Memorial and hear from local historian and St. Luke's friend, Clete Ladd.
$75/person includes motorcoach, boxed lunch, and entrance into all museums and exhibits. It is recommended to bring snacks for the bus rides.
