Supporting the Indiana Women's Prison Leath Unit

The Officer Breann Leath Memorial Maternal & Child Health Unit is a special unit in the Indiana Women's Prison where infants and children up to 2.5 years old can reside with their mothers while they are incarcerated. Most states require imprisoned moms to give up their babies within hours after they are born, but the Leath Unit allows babies to stay with their mothers. There is a rigorous application process to be accepted, but for the moms who get this opportunity, all diapers, formula and other necessities are provided along with a large variety of classes on parenting and bonding with baby.

The Leath Unit is run entirely on donations — they rely on donors for everything from formula and diapers, to volunteers to teach classes. St. Luke's Diaper Pantry will begin supplying diapers to the Leath Unit next month, to support moms making this important commitment to their babies.
