Week 3 Action Steps

  1. SUPPORT THE "INDIANAPOLIS RECORDER" 2901 N. Tacoma, Indianapolis, IN

You can see the new mural by artist Amiah Mims on the side of the Recorder’s building. This mural was unveiled on November 2 and honors the 125 years of African-American publishing in Indianapolis.

The Indianapolis Recorder is one of the top African-American publications in the nation. Founded in 1897, a subscription costs as little as $8/month and is a great way to dig deeper into the issues and events of importance to our Black community. Subscribe to the publication and commit an hour a week to reading articles about Black business leaders and health providers, updates on Black-owned restaurants and retail stores, community events, neighborhood meetings and more.

Get an e-subscription to the Recorder by clicking here.

  2. MAKE YOUR VOICE HEARD ABOUT PLANS FOR INDIANA AVENUE

Indiana Landmarks has proposed “Reclaim Indiana Avenue.” This plan preserves African American history in Indianapolis. Take a look at the Reclaim Indiana Ave. website and then email Vop Osilli, President of the City/County Council  and Jeff Bennett, Deputy Mayor of Community Development, City of Indianapolis in support of the alternative development being proposed for Indiana Ave.

The monstrosity that Buckingham has proposed would continue our city’s shameful attempts to erase black heritage in Indianapolis. You can find a lot more information about the impacts of redlining through the Indiana Historical Society’s Living the Legacy series here.

  3. CELEBRATE JAZZ IN INDIANAPOLIS

Indy Jazz Fest, November 13, 14, 20, 21, presented virtually (website, Facebook live & youtube live) HERE.

Don’t miss Celebrate Naptown All Star Concert (11/13), Native Sun: Legalize Being Black (11/14), Charlie Ballantine Vonnegut (11/20) and Jared Thompson (11/21).
